As a child, and even as an adult, I spent most of my summers in Muskoka, Canada. I was lucky enough to have grandparents that had a cottage right on the water on Bala Park Island. When we were there, we were on the water every day – swimming, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, paddle boarding, you name it. I loved every minute of my time up there. While I was in Muskoka, my family would do various fun activities and go on exciting adventures. I wanted to share some ideas for parents on how to create memorable vacations in Muskoka during the summer.

Spend the Day on the Water
Lake Muskoka is the perfect summer destination for those looking to get out on the lake and have fun in the water. As I said, we spent EVERY day on the water. With activities like water skiing, tubing, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, fishing, and playing paddle ball, there is never a shortage of things to do. If you don’t have a boat or kayak, there are plenty of local businesses where you can rent some. The rentals are very affordable, and you are supporting a local business.
Visit the Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh & Muskoka Winery
Another place to add to your itinerary is the Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh & Muskoka Winery – a family-run business that has everything cranberry. The Cranberry Marsh has been producing some of the region’s finest cranberries since 1950, and guided tours through the marsh provide great insight into what it takes to grow these cranberries and turn them into jam, pies, bread, muffins & even wine.
Go for a Hike
Of course, I need to share some options of things you can do off the water as well, as I know not everyone loves to be near the lake. Luckily, Muskoka has plenty of great hiking spots for all abilities. One of my favorite places to hike is around Hardy Lake. The scenery is beautiful, and you can see an array of local plants & wildlife. It is a relatively easy hike for all ages and depending on how far you want to walk, you can just turn back to the car whenever you’re ready to leave.
Visit the Gravenhurst Market
Visiting the Gravenhurst Market is a must! The Gravenhurst Market has an extensive range of vendors with fresh produce, handmade items, baked goodies, and delicious meals. It is the perfect place to wander around the local artisan stalls and find some exquisite handmade décor for your home. Make sure to try some of the handmade hot sauce, jam, cheese, bread, crepes, and more. If you’re looking for a way to create a memorable vacation in Muskoka, make sure to add the Gravenhurst Market to your list.
Watch the SWS Ski Show
If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience in Muskoka, then be sure to watch the SWS Ski Show. This incredible show is a display of amazing choreography and impressive tricks from highly skilled water skiers, wakeboarders and more! They are an exceptionally talented group of individuals that put-on water shows around Muskoka to help fund some of their competition trips. Many of these athletes have qualified for the World Championships & the Olympics. Their remarkable performance is a great way to create memorable vacations.
View the Stunning Bala Falls
The Bala Falls are impressive. When you approach the falls, the thunderous roar of rushing water fills your ears and catches your attention immediately. The pictures don’t quite do justice to the magnitude of this wonder – it must truly be seen with one’s own eyes to fully appreciate its allure. Unfortunately, in the last couple of years, the Bala Falls were converted into a Waterpower Plant. However, you can still see parts of the falls that have not been touched and still hold their beauty.
Take in the Scenery from the Water
When visiting Lake Muskoka, take some time to fully enjoy the breathtaking scenery. I personally enjoy jumping in the boat and exploring the different islands around Muskoka. From the water, you can take in both the topography and the unique cottages that people have built along the shore. I find these leisure boat rides along the shoreline to be very peaceful and a welcomed break from technology.
Muskoka is truly an incredible destination. With so many adventures and activities to do, there’s something for everyone. From fishing trips to hikes through breathtaking sceneries and picturesque cottages, exploring Muskoka is an unforgettable experience. I highly recommend visiting Muskoka this summer, it’s sure to offer you unforgettable moments that your family will cherish for years to come!
